Leon Abrams originally served with a pioneer outfit in the 20th Marines - the engineer regiment assigned to the Fourth Marine Division. He took part in the battles of Namur, Saipan, and Tinian with Company D, Second Battalion of the 20th; when they were disbanded on August 31, 1944, he was reassigned to Able Company, 24th Marines.

Abrams led a fire team in one of the rifle platoons during the battle of Iwo Jima. He was killed on February 25, 1945, during the initial assault on Iwo Jima's brutal "Meat Grinder."

Leon Abrams was buried in Plot 1, Row 24, Grave 1168 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo. He was reburied in a private cemetery after the war.
