John Adelmann enlisted in the Marine Corps the day after his twentieth birthday. His first duty station was at ROC Quantico; he was assigned to Able Company, 24th Marines and arrived at their barracks at Camp Pendleton on September 8, 1943. He served as a rifleman during the battle of Namur, and re-qualified with the BAR in the spring of 1944.

PFC Adelmann was wounded on June 22, 1944, when his company was ambushed on Saipan. He was evacuated to a hospital and spent several months convalescing. Adelman was returned to Able Company in the fall of 1944; he went through the training preparations for Iwo Jima, but fell ill or was injured while en route to the objective. He was debarked at the Marshall Islands, and hospitalized on Eniwetok. His further service is unknown.

After the war, Adelmann returned to Norwood, where he married Catherine Campbell. He died in 2000, and is buried in Highland Cemetery.
