Norman Bell, a youth from Brooklyn, joined the Marine Corps at the age of eighteen. After completing boot camp, he was sent to Maui to join the Fourth Division as a replacement. PFC Bell was assigned to Able Company, 24th Marines, as a BAR gunner.

Bell was killed on the second day of the battle of Iwo Jima as his company performed mop-up duties along the beaches. He was temporarily buried in Plot 1, Row 9, Grave 359 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo; after the war, he was permanently laid to rest in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
