With Dog Company:
David Brunjes began the war as a heavy machine gunner in Dog Company, 24th Marines. He fought through the battle of Namur, and was reassigned to Able Company in March, 1944.
With Able Company:
Brunjes joined Able Company's machine gun platoon, and landed with them on Saipan. On June 22, 1944, his company was cut off from the rest of the regiment and surrounded by enemy forces on Hill 600. The machine gun platoon suffered especially heavy casualties. Among them was David Brunjes, who was killed on a lonely hill far from Missouri.

Brunjes was buried in Grave 616, Row 8, Plot 3 of the 4th Marine Division Cemetery. Today, he rests in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Plot N, Row 1, Grave 15.
