George Burch joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He attended boot camp at Parris Island and was sent to ROC Quantico upon graduation; he was assigned to Able Company, 24th Marines on September 8, 1943.

Private Burch was promoted to PFC on January 1, 1944; he served as a rifleman during the battles of Namur and Saipan where he was seriously wounded on July 5, 1944. Burch was evacuated to the Aiea Heights Naval Hospital later that month, and never returned to the battalion.
