Private James Cavender joined Able Company in the fall of 1944. He served as a mortarman during the battle of Iwo Jima.

Cavender survived the war unwounded, and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of corporal. He returned to West Virginia, where he entered the machinist's trade, working for Kaiser Aluminum and Gravely Tractor Inc; he was a proud member of the Steelworkers Union for nearly 45 years.

James Cavender married, and raised children and grandchildren before his death in 2010. He is buried in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, West Virginia.
