With Able Company:

Joseph Chifos was one of the original members of Able Company. He served as a BAR gunner in the battle of Namur, and with the company's duty section on Saipan.

Chifos is listed on the battalion's rolls for July, 1944; however there is no indication that he participated in the invasion of Tinian. He may have been detailed as a guard to watch over the company's established camp on Saipan.

PFC Chifos was transferred to Headquarters Company in the fall of 1944.

With HQ Company:

Joseph Chifos returned to the battalion as a rifleman with Headquarters Company, First Battalion; he may have served with the experimental Assault Platoon. He survived the battle without injury, and was discharged on October 30, 1945.

He died in 1987, and is buried in Dayton National Cemetery, Ohio.
