James Chvatal Junior was one of the original members of Able Company. He carried a Browning Automatic Rifle into action on Namur, after which battle he was promoted to corporal and given command of a fire team. Chvatal was slightly wounded on July 6, 1944, while fighting on Saipan, but was not evacuated; he stayed on the front lines for the remainder of the battle and the subsequent Tinian campaign.

Chvatal served as a squad leader during the battle of Iwo Jima; he was wounded in action in early March, but returned to duty March 11 and saw out the end of the campaign. Chvatal ended the war with Able Company and returned to civilian life.
