Dallas Colburn was an original member of Able Company; he held the rank of corporal when the company was activated. On January 11, 1944, he was promoted to Sergeant and given command of a rifle squad.

Colburn fought on Namur and on Saipan. He was badly wounded on June 22, 1944, and was sent to the Aiea Heights Naval Hospital to recover.

Eventually, Colburn returned to Able Company. He was promoted to platoon sergeant - by now he was one of only four original sergeants left in the company - and fought through Iwo Jima unwounded.
