Robert Conway was born to Leo and Coletta Conway in 1926. He grew up in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Conway enlisted in the Marine Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor; he qualified as a rifleman and joined Company A in 1943. He was promoted to Private First Class on August 30, 1943.

Conway was a rifleman - possibly an assistant to a BAR gunner - during the battle of Namur. He carried the BAR itself on Saipan, where he was wounded on July 5, 1944.

PFC Conway was transferred to Naval Hospital #10 on July 20; he would never return to the company. After the war, he moved back to Ohio, where he married. Conway died in Cuyahoga at the age of 49.
