George Couch joined Able Company, 24th Marines in the fall of 1944, and was promptly assigned to the mortar section. He fought through the battle of Iwo Jima without injury, and mustered out with the rest of the company at the end of the war.
After returning to West Virginia, Couch married Ruth Irene Adams, and raised a family while working as a driver for a local dairy; later he found a position in golf course maintenance. He died in 2007, at the age of 81.
George Couch is buried in Kadesh Chapel Cemetery, near his hometown of Beech Bottom.
