Ernest Cubero enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1940. After completing boot camp at Parris Island, he deployed to Cuba as a member of the Fifth Marines. Cubero was eventually promoted to corporal; he was transferred to Able Company, 24th Marines in the spring of 1944, and served as a fire team leader.
Corporal Cubero was wounded on June 16, 1944, while fighting on Saipan. He was evacuated to Naval Hospital #10 in Hawaii, and was removed from the battalion's muster rolls on July 20. Cubero never returned to Company A.
After his discharge, Cubero returned to his wife in the United States. He died Citrus, Florida, in 1995.
