John Cummings grew up in Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn. He enlisted in the Marine Corps when just seventeen years old. In 1944, Cummings was reassigned to Camp Maui; he joined Able Company, 24th Marines as a replacement that fall.

Nineteen-year-old Cummings was killed on his second day of combat on the beaches of Iwo Jima. He was buried in the Fourth Division cemetery on that island, and was later reburied in the Long Island National Cemetery, Section H, Site 8142.
