John Cuthbertson was the fifth of six children born to Alben and Josephine Cuthbertson of Philadelphia. He enlisted in the regular Marine Corps in 1942, trained at Parris Island, and was assigned to Company D, First Separate Battalion as a heavy machine gunner.

With Dog Company:

PFC Cuthbertson served with Lieutenant James Donovan's First Machine Gun Platoon during training at Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton; he fought with them in the battle of Namur. In the spring of 1944, Cuthbertson was transferred to Able Company along with the rest of his platoon.

With Able Company:

Cuthbertson participated in the battles of Saipan and Tinian with Able's machine gun platoon; he was promoted to corporal in the fall of 1944.

He was wounded on February 20, 1945, while fighting on Iwo Jima. John Cuthbertson was immediately evaucated; he arrived at the Aiea Heights Naval Hospital for treatment on February 27, never to return to combat.
