Donald Ackerman enlisted in the regular Marine Corps on his twentieth birthday. He joined Able Company from the Marine detachment at the US Naval Hospital in San Diego on September 22, 1943.
On January 1, 1944, he was transferred back to the hospital as a patient. He was eventually released from the company for reasons of ill health.
Ackerman eventually settled in Florida with his wife, Vivian. He died in Highlands in 1994, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lake Placid.
