John Donnelly joined Able Company on September 1, 1943, from a replacement detachment at Parris Island. He served as a rifleman on Namur, and in the spring of 1944 qualified to carry a BAR.

Donnelly fought on Saipan and Tinian, was promoted to corporal, and given command of a squad. He landed on Iwo Jima and fought through the month of February. Donnelly was wounded on March 5, 1945, during an attack on the Meat Grinder. He was evacuated for treatment; his further service is unknown.

John Donnelly was discharged on November 6, 1945. He died in Florida in 1988, and is buried in Bay Pines National Cemetery, Section 52 Row 13 Site 36.
