Albert Duryea joined Able Company in September 1943, from the Marine base at Terminal Island, San Pedro, California. He had two years of experience under his belt, and the new company was in need of NCOs. Duryea was given command of a rifle squad.

He fought on Namur and landed on Saipan. On June 16, 1944, Duryea was part of a volunteer group trying to reach Corporal Anthony Pramberger's heavy machine gun, which had been knocked out. The Japanese spotted the group, and let fly with a barrage from a battery of German-made 88mm artillery pieces. Duryea, who was in front, was hit in the head by a shell splinter and instantly killed.
