Burnett Fenger was the youngest of six children born to Herman and Ellie Fenger of New Orleans, Louisiana. He joined the Marines a few days before his eighteenth birthday, and attended boot camp at MCRD San Diego. After completing training, he was stationed at the Naval Ammunition Depot at Hawthorne, Nevada.
Fenger was transferred to Able Company on September 2, 1943. He served as a rifleman during the battles of Namur and Saipan; he was evacuated from the latter island on June 16, 1944. Although the battalion's muster rolls listed him as "sick," it is likely he was wounded by Japanese fire; he was awarded a Purple Heart medal.
Bernie Fenger never returned to the battalion; his further service is unknown. He returned to Louisiana after his discharge, and married Mae Evelyn Cagnolatti in 1948. They raised a family in New Orleans before Fenger passed away in 1990.
He is buried in Lake Lawn Cemetery, Metairie, Louisiana.
