Rifleman James Fields joined Able Company as a rifleman after the Namur campaign.
Private Fields had the misfortune to be wounded twice during the battle of Saipan. His first wound, on July 5 1944, was superficial and was patched up in the field; the second, on July 8, was much more serious and required his hospitalization. Fields missed the invasion of Tinian while recovering, but eventually returned to the battalion wearing the stripe of a Private First Class.
Fields landed on Iwo Jima with his company; he received a third wound on March 5, 1945, while attacking the Meat Grinder. He was again evacuated and did not return to the battalion; a third wound often meant a ticket home.
James Fields' subsequent service is unknown.
