Henry Fones saw pre-war service with the 6th Marines and with various detachments in Washington, DC.

With Able Company:

Fones was assigned to Able Company as a senior line clerk. He was one of the original members of the company, and fought alongside them on Namur, but as his administrative strengths outweighed his use as a rifleman on the line. He was transferred to the headquarters company in the spring of 1944.

With Headquarters Company:

Staff Sergeant Fones was assigned to the Battalion Headquarters Section. He probably served as the battalion's senior classification sergeant. Fones was present for duty through the battles of Saipan and Tinian, but left the battalion before Iwo Jima.
