William Davis served as the primary clerk for Able Company, and as such, assisted the senior officers and NCOs at headquarters with the myriad duties associated with running the company.
Davis did not ship out with the company when they left for Namur. He was part of a small detachment left behind to complete the process of moving the company's base of operations to Camp Maui. Davis sailed to Maui aboard the SS Santa Monica, arriving on February 13. The detachment began organizing the new location, and were still at work when the company returned from combat on Namur.
Davis was promoted to corporal, and saw his first combat on Saipan. He was wounded on June 22, and evacuated to the Aiea Heights Naval hospital.
Upon his return to the company, Davis was promoted to sergeant. He served on Iwo Jima without being wounded, and mustered out with the rest of the company at the end of the war.
William Davis returned to Ohio, married, and was residing in Youngstown when he died in 1976. The sergeant is buried in Girard Liberty Union Cemetery.
