Robert Bales joined Baker Company from the Fourth Signal Company on February 21, 1944. He fell seriously ill in the spring of 1944, and was hospitalized in Naval Hospital #8, thereby missing the battles for Saipan and Tinian.

Bales rejoined the company prior to the invasion of Iwo Jima. He hit the beaches as a rifleman in one of the front line platoons, but was wounded and evacuated on February 21, 1945.
