Gernie Barnhill was a replacement assigned to Baker Company, 24th Marines, during the battle of Iwo Jima. He arrived on the front lines in the early days of March, 1945, and was killed in action within forty-eight hours. Gernie was survived by his wife, Rosa, and three children.
Barnhill was buried on Iwo Jima; today he rests in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery, Georgetown County, SC.
