With Baker Company:
Herbert Bevins was an original member of Baker Company, 24th Marines. He served as a rifleman during the battle of Namur, then was requalified as a BARman while recuperating at Camp Maui in the spring of 1944. Bevins carried the automatic rifle through the battle of Saipan.
PFC Bevins was not present for the invasion of Tinian, for unknown reasons. He was transferred to the Battalion HQ Company in the fall of 1944.
With HQ Company:
Bevins maintained his rating as a BARman while with Headquarters Company, and may have served as a battalion scout. He was wounded and evacuated from Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Bevins did not return to combat, and was discharged on July 26, 1945.
Bevins died in Florida in 1998. He is buried in Bay Pines National Cemetery, Section 52, Row 18, Site 35.
