Lawrence Byerly was an original member of Baker Company, 24th Marines. He served as a rifleman during the battle of Namur, then became a platoon messenger while stationed at Camp Maui.
Byerly was evacuated from Saipan on June 19, 1944. He had fallen seriously ill; shortly thereafter he was transferred to US Naval Base Hospital #6 for treatment.
PFC Byerly did not return to the battalion.
