Centofanti survived Tinian without a scratch, and returned to Camp Maui as one of the few unwounded survivors of three campaigns. He received a promotion to sergeant while on Maui.

Sergeant Centofanti was killed in action on March 8, 1945, during the battle of Iwo Jima.
