James Cochran was one of the original members of Baker Company's machine gun platoon. He was promoted to Private First Class on January 11, 1944; he saw combat on Namur as a gunner for his squad.

Cochran made the landing on Saipan, but was wounded and evacuated on June 17. He was transferred to a Naval hospital in July, 1944, and did not return to combat.
