Clifford Cowell joined Baker Company, 24th Marines, on February 21, 1944. He had previously served with the Fourth Signal Company, but was needed more urgently as a front-line rifleman. While on Maui with his new company, Cowell qualified with the Browning Automatic Rifle, and carried the support weapon into combat on Saipan.
Cowell was killed in action on July 7, 1944. He was buried in Plot 4, Row 5, Grave 830 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery; after the war he was reburied in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
