Herbert Darmstadter joined First Battalion on December 11, 1943. He had just completed training at Camp Elliott. Originally posted to the Headquarters company, he was transferred to Baker Company as a rifleman less than two weeks later.

Private Darmstadter fought in the battle of Namur, but was transferred out of the battalion for unknown reasons in the spring of 1944.

He returned as a Private First Class in the fall of 1944, and served as a rifleman in the battle of Iwo Jima. Darmstadter was wounded on March 4, 1945, and evacuated from combat.
