With Baker Company:
John Edwards was one of the original members of Baker Company, 24th Marines. He served in an unknown capacity (MOS 937) on Namur; later he was made a platoon messenger. Edwards was wounded during the battle of Saipan, and transferred to a Navy hospital in July, 1944.
With HQ Company:
Edwards rejoined the battalion in the fall of 1944; he served with Headquarters Company as a rifleman until his sickness-related evacuation from Iwo Jima on February 20, 1945. PFC Edwards never returned to combat.
