James Moorman was born to Walter and Sanna Moorman in Summers, Arkansas. He left behind his wife, Lynn, to enlist in the Marines.

Private First Class Moorman was one of the original members of Dog Company. He was a gunner with the Second Machine Gun Platoon.
Moorman fought through the battle of Namur, and was transferred to Baker Company in March, 1944.
With Baker Company:
James Moorman served as an ammunition carrier in Baker Company's machine gun platoon through the battles of Saipan and Tinian. In the fall of 1944, he was promoted to corporal and given command of a squad.
Moorman was fatally wounded shortly after landing on Iwo Jima; despite medical attention, he died on February 20. He was buried in Plot 2, Row 2, Grave 335 of the Fifth Marine Division Cemetery - an unusual location for a Fourth Division marine.
After the war, Moorman was reburied in Sunset Memorial Park, Spartanburg.
