With Baker Company:
Raymond Butler, an eighteen year old BAR gunner, joined Baker Company in the spring of 1944. He served with one of the company's rifle platoons.
Butler was wounded on June 17, 1944, during the battle of Saipan. He was evacuated from the island, and transferred to a Navy hospital on July 11, 1944.
With HQ Company:
PFC Butler rejoined the battalion on Camp Maui after recovering from his wounds. He was assigned to the Battalion Headquarters Company, and carried his BAR with the assault platoon.
Butler was killed on Iwo Jima, February 20, 1945. He was initially buried in Plot 1, Row 4, Grave 199 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery; after the war, he was reinterred in Plot E, Grave 552 of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
