Russell Chambers was a machine gunner with Baker Company when the unit was formed in 1943. He served with them through three campaigns - Namur, Saipan, and Tinian - escaping each without a scratch. He was transferred to Headquarters Company in the fall of 1944.
With HQ Company:
PFC Chambers served with Headquarters Company for only a brief time. He was killed in action on Iwo Jima on February 20, 1945.
Chambers was buried in Plot 1, Row 8, Grave 362 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo; after the war, his remains were returned to a private cemetery in the United States.
