Horace Allen, one of the original members of Charlie Company, served as a BAR gunner in one of the rifle platoons from the formation of the 24th Marines through the spring of 1944. He received a promotion to corporal for his performance in the battle of Namur, and was given command of a fire team.

Allen was evacuated from Saipan on June 18, 1944; the battalion muster rolls listed him as "sick" but a postwar collection named him as one of the many wounded. Whether sick or wounded, Allen was transferred to Hospital 105 in June, 1944, and did not return to the battalion.
