Sergeant Philip Baldwin joined Charlie Company on February 24, 1945, during the battle of Iwo Jima. He had previously served with the 24th Replacement Draft as a Heavy Weapons NCO.
Baldwin was killed in action on March 1, 1945, as Charlie Company attacked Iwo's deadly "Meat Grinder" complex. He had taken shelter in a large crater with his friend James Parker and fellow gunners Ottis Boxx, Howard Davis, and Glenn Buzzard when a mortar shell hit their position. Baldwin was buried in the Fourth Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima; his body was returned to Wisconsin after the war and rests in Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville.
