Elmer Bennett was born around the year 1919 in Wheeling, West Virginia. His family relocated to Ohio; Bennett listed Bridgeport as his home of record when he enlisted in the Marines.

Bennett became a member of Charlie Company; he carried a BAR in one of the rifle platoons. He served in the battles of Namur and Saipan, where he was killed on June 29, 1944.

PFC Bennett was buried in Plot 3, Row 12, Grave 734 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan. After the war, his remains were reinterred in a private cemetery in West Virginia.
