Roy Bishop was less than a month shy of his nineteenth birthday when he enlisted in the Marines. He attended boot camp at MCRD San Diego, and was sent to Charlie Company, 24th Marines on January 7, 1944.
Private Bishop served as a rifleman during the battles of Namur and Saipan. He was evacuated from the front lines on Independence Day, 1944, due to a severe illness; Bishop was hospitalized for several weeks and missed the fighting on Tinian. He returned to the company in the fall of 1944, qualified as a BAR gunner, and was promoted to Private First Class.
Bishop participated in the battle of Iwo Jima, where he was wounded in March, 1945. He stayed with the Marines through the end of the war, and was discharged as a corporal.
Roy Bishop died in 1992. He is buried in Senoia City Cemetery, Senoia, Georgia.
