James Booker was born in Itawamba County, Mississippi, in 1919. His family later relocated to Florida; Howard listed Winter Garden as his hometown when he enlisted in the Marines in 1940.

Booker was assigned to Charlie Company, 24th Marines as a corporal. In December, 1943, he was transferred to the staff of Camp Pendleton, and did not go overseas with his company.

Booker was eventually sent to another combat unit, and was wounded in action. He mustered out as a sergeant.

He died in 1966, and is buried in Winter Garden Cemetery.
