Joe Browning was assigned to Charlie Company in the fall of 1943. He served as a rifleman, and received a promotion to corporal on January 11, 1944, two days before shipping out to combat on Namur.
Browning was designated as a fire team leader in the spring of 1944, and led a team of three Marines into combat on Saipan. By the end of that battle, he was likely moved up to command of a squad.
Corporal Browning was killed on July 24, 1944, as his company fought to secure the Tinian beachhead. He was buried in Plot 5, Row 8, Grave 1030 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan.
After the war, Browning's remains were returned to the United States. He lies in Section Y, Site 480 of the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Tennessee.
