Frank Burgess was one of the original members of Charlie Company; he began his service with the 24th Marines as a corporal in one of the rifle platoons. He led a fire team into action on Namur and Saipan, where he was wounded on June 16, 1944. Burgess was transferred to US Naval Hospital #10 on July 24, 1944, while the remainder of his company attacked the island of Tinian.

Burgess returned to the company in the fall of 1944; he was promoted to sergeant and given command of a rifle squad. He fought on Iwo Jima, where he was wounded a second time in March, 1944.
