Nelson Burke was one of the original members of Charlie Company. He served as a BAR gunner in one of the rifle platoons during the battle of Namur; in the spring of 1944 he was designated as a fire team leader.

Burke was promoted to corporal on July 18, 1944, in the interim between the battles of Saipan and Tinian. He became a squad leader in his rifle platoon in the fall of 1944, and was fighting in that capacity when he was wounded on March 8, 1945, while fighting for Iwo Jima.
