Charles Burton was one of the original members of Charlie Company. He served as a rifleman during the battle of Namur, and became a platoon messenger in the spring of 1944.

PFC Burton was killed on July 8, 1944, as his company fought to clear one of the last pockets of Japanese resistance on Saipan. He was buried in Plot 1, Row 2, Grave 47 of the Second Marine Division Cemetery, and awarded a posthumous Bronze Star.

In 1948, Burton's remains were returned for burial in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery, Keysville.
