Clarence Campbell, a pre-war regular Marine, had several years of service with various Navy yards before being assigned to Charlie Company in the fall of 1943. He was transferred to the staff of Camp Pendleton on December 4, 1943.

Campbell rejoined the company on Maui in the spring of 1944. He went into action on Saipan, but was wounded and evacuated on June 15, the day of the landings.

PFC Campbell was sent to Naval Hospital #128 in July; he would not return to the battalion.
