With Dog Company:
Joey Chalifour served as a gunner with Dog Company's 3rd Platoon. He participated in the battle of Namur, and was transferred to Charlie Company in the spring of 1944.
With Charlie Company:
Chalifour became a gunner with Charlie Company's machine gun platoon. He was wounded and evacuated on June 22, when Charlie Company was cut off on Hill 700. After extricating the trapped Marines, a rescuing unit brought Chalifour to an aid station. He was evacuated to a hospital ship.
Chalifour arrived at Naval Hospital #10 in Hawaii on July 20, 1944. He did not return to the compay.
After the war, Chalifour worked for the postal service. He married and settled in Raleigh, NC where he died of bronchitis in 1997.
Joey Chalifour is buried in Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
