Norman Conway was one of the original NCOs of Charlie Company. As a corporal, he acted as a fire team leader during the battle of Namur and as a BAR gunner on Saipan.

Conway was temporarily evacuated for illness on Saipan, but returned to duty on July 12. He was promoted to sergeant six days later, and led a squad on Tinian.

Sergeant Conway trained as a squad leader through the fall and winter of 1944; however, he remained behind at Camp Maui when the division shipped out for Iwo Jima. He saw no further combat and mustered out at the end of his service.
