Ansel Darby was a pre-war regular Marine. He joined Charlie Company in the fall of 1943, and served as a corporal with the company's weapons platoon. Darby was promoted to sergeant and became a section leader - possibly with the mortar section - on January 11, 1944.
Sergeant Darby fought in the battles of Namur, Saipan and Tinian. He was wounded on July 24, 1944, during the landing on Tinian, but was returned to duty five days later and finished out the campaign.
Darby left the battalion in the fall of 1944. He died in 1979 and is buried in Greenville Memorial Gardens in his South Carolina hometown.
