John Davenport was one of the original members of Charlie Company, 24th Marines. He served as a rifleman during the battle of Namur.
Davenport was promoted to corporal in the spring of 1944. He landed on Saipan and fought until evacuated for illness on June 24; he was transferred to Naval Hospital #10 for treatment and missed the battle of Tinian.
Corporal Davenport returned to duty as a squad leader in the fall of 1944. He was wounded and evacuated from Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945, and did not return to combat.
John Davenport died in 1991.
