James Dull was one of the original members of Charlie Company. He served as a messenger in one of the rifle platoons during the battle of Namur, then assigned to lead a fire team on Saipan and Tinian.

Dull was promoted to corporal in the fall of 1944; he was given command of a rifle squad which he led into action on Iwo Jima. He was wounded and evacuated from Iwo on February 21, 1945, and did not return to combat.
