Arthur "Pete" Elzey was born in Maryland in 1922. He was inducted into the Marine Corps in 1944, and was assigned to the duty section of Charlie Company, 24th Marines. PFC Elzey served with the company's headquarters during the battle of Iwo Jima, where he was wounded on March 2, 1945.

Elzey was evacuated from the island; he would see no further combat. He returned to Maryland after his discharge, and died in Cambridge in 1992.
