John Engel joined Charlie Company in the fall of 1943. As a private, he served as a rifleman in the battle of Namur. Engel was promoted to Private First Class and requalified with the BAR in the spring of 1944.
Engel participated in the battle of Saipan. He was hospitalized in Naval Hospital #10 on July 26, 1944; the battalion's muster rolls contain no indication of the reason for his removal from combat status. John Engel never returned to the battalion.
